After putting up some shaky performances early in the season, the Suns are now looking more assured, composed, and ready to win. We have followed the Gold Coast closely as a team that might spring some upsets when the time was right, and it’s pleasing to see them hit some mid-season form.
After beating the Swans on the road and the Dockers at home, the Suns travelled to Ballarat to face the improving Bulldogs in round 10. The game was close, but the Dogs had too many guns to scrape home by 19 points. The Suns left with their heads held high, and the run of solid efforts augurs well for the rest of the season. We will be expecting the Gold Coast Suns to take some more scalps yet.
Hawthorn travelled to Tasmania on the back of a series of losses but turned it around against the high-flying Lions, kicking a big total and holding their nerve in a classic shoot-out. The Hawks posted an impressive 18.9, a score that will win most games of AFL.
So how do we rank the Hawks based on their hot and cold form? They have certainly clocked up some miles in recent weeks, with games in Melbourne, Launceston, and now Darwin. Can they string together some credible efforts? We think not, and will bet against them here with medium confidence.
Key Match-up: Jeffrey v Grainger-Barras
Gold Coast key forward Joel Jeffrey came from nowhere to boot 5.0 against the Dogs in round 10. The 20-year-old was having just his second start for the year but showed he might be a real prospect to watch. Standing 192 cm and 82 kgs, he still has some maturing to do, but booting five majors in a low-scoring game against solid opposition is a huge achievement. The uniquely named Denver Grainger-Barras is a 20-year-old key defender for the Hawks who might be under real pressure in this game. If Jeffrey, Chol, and Casboult all take the field like they did against the Dogs, the Hawks defenders, including Grainger-Barras, will face a true acid test.
Suns v Hawks betting tips & strategy
Suns to win -3.5 in line betting
The Suns are slight favourites here and are expected to prevail in a close encounter. You would imagine they will be advantaged by the Darwin heat. The line is set at skinny 3.5 points, and total points at 162.5. When handicapping a team with a huge gap between their best and their worst performances like the Hawks, it’s wise to bet against them unless multiple factors line up in their favour. On that note, we will stick with the Suns here. The Suns -3.5 points is the official tip, available on Ladbrokes. 3.5 points should prove trivial to the outcome.
