Gold Coast Suns v Brisbane Lions match preview
The high-flying Brisbane Lions will be looking for their eighth consecutive AFL victory this Saturday afternoon as they face the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium.
Despite playing on the road, Brisbane are favourites for this Q-Clash at $1.58 with Bet365. Gold Coast offer value at $2.50 with Unibet, while the line is set at 9.5 points.
Last Saturday, it was a disappointing performance from the Suns as they went down to the Giants by 39 points on the road. Losing every quarter, Damien Hardwick’s men were never in the contest and kicked just six goals for the day.
The Suns have now lost 15 straight matches on the road and have fallen down to 12th on the AFL ladder. However, they are unbeaten at home in 2024, so expect them to bounce back strongly.
Small forward Malcolm Rosas Jr is expected to return from suspension for the Suns, while ruckman Jarrod Witts is also in the frame after missing the past two weeks with a back injury.
Brisbane won their seventh consecutive match last Sunday, beating the first-placed Sydney Swans by two points at the Gabba. In a thrilling contest, the Lions came from 15 points down at three-quarter-time and sealed the win through a late goal from Callum Ah Chee.
Sitting in 13th just five rounds ago, Chris Fagan’s men have worked their way up to third on the ladder and are storming towards the finals. After making the Grand Final in 2023, top AFL bookmakers have them at $5.50 to lift the trophy this season.
The Lions will be without co-captain Harris Andrews, as he was concussed against the Swans. With Tom Doedee, Darcy Gardiner and Jack Payne already sidelined, Brisbane are now battling a shortage of key defensive options.

Gold Coast v Brisbane R20 betting predictions
Although the Gold Coast Suns are perfect at home in 2024, they were soundly beaten when these sides faced off back in round eight. They also have a record of 3-7 against top-10 sides this season. The Lions are the form team in the AFL, so back them to cover the 9.5-point line at $1.91 with leading Australian bookies.
With several talls absent from the Brisbane defence, this is the perfect opportunity for Suns key forward Ben King to make a statement. Sitting second in the Coleman Medal chase, the 24-year-old has scored 14 goals in his last four home matches. He has kicked multiple goals in each of his last six matches against the Lions, so back King for three or more at $2.15 with top online bookmakers.
A key part of the Lions’ turnaround this season, midfielder Hugh McCluggage is averaging a career-high 25.1 disposals per game. The 26-year-old has collected over 25 disposals on 10 occasions this season — including last week, when he was the match-winner with 26 disposals and three goals. McCluggage had 32 touches against the Suns in round eight, so expect him to have 25 or more at $1.90 with Bet365.
