Gold Coast vs Sydney match preview
Gold Coast will be looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season, as they host the Sydney Swans this Sunday afternoon.
Last Saturday, the Suns suffered a shock loss to Richmond by 11 points at Marvel Stadium. After failing to kick straight in the first half, Gold Coast were blown out of the water in the third quarter, conceding six goals to one – which created a margin they couldn’t overcome.
The result raises concerns around the Suns’ ability to perform on the road. But with a perfect record at home, it is no surprise to see Damien Hardwick’s side as such clear favourites at $1.48 with leading AFL bookmakers.
Gold Coast have a star-studded midfield led by former first round picks Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell and Sam Flanders, while key forward Ben King is currently leading the Coleman Medal with 18 goals. Defensively, the Suns have conceded the least amount of points in the AFL.
Sydney were also unsuccessful in Round 6 as they lost to Port Adelaide by eight points at the SCG. After kicking just two goals in the first half, the Swans trailed by as much as 34 points. They came home flying, but late inaccuracy stopped any chance of a comeback as they fell short.
This takes the Swans to a record of 2-4 for the season, as they sit 14th on the ladder. Injuries have plagued Dean Cox’s side, but the players that starred in their strong 2024 have all had slow starts to the year. At $2.80 with major sports online bookmakers, Sydney are the outsiders in this clash.
Gold Coast vs Sydney team news
Don’t expect too many changes to the Suns team this week, despite their loss to the Tigers. Brayden Fiorini, Ned Moyle and Sam Clohesy have been added as emergencies.
Expect Sydney swingman Aaron Francis to be promoted from being the substitute after he had 14 disposals and three goals in the last quarter against Port Adelaide. The Tom McCartin forward experiment is over, which may see Peter Ladhams return to the side in place of Joel Hamling.
Gold Coast vs Sydney prediction
Although the Suns lost to the Tigers last Saturday, returning to the Gold Coast, they should return to their dominant best that we saw in the first four rounds. The Swans are clearly missing too many players due to injury , but they have kept games competitive so don’t expect this to be a blowout. Back Gold Coast to win by less than 40 points at $2.15 with BetOnline.
Small forward Ben Long has been a revelation for the Suns in 2025, kicking 13 goals in five games. He has kicked multiple goals on four occasions including each of the last two weeks. With the Suns expected to dominate field position, Long should continue his good form with three or more goals at $3.70 with BetOnline.
With injuries to Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey, Hayden McLean has become the main target in the Sydney forward line. He has kicked multiple goals in three of his four games this season and should have ended up with a bag after kicking 2.4 against Port. At $2.05 with BetOnline, back McLean to continue his goalscoring form with two or more goals.
