Gold Coast Suns crush Sydney Swans with huge second-half comeback

Gold Coast Suns

Gold Coast have produced a stunning second-half turnaround to thump Sydney by 38 points at People First Stadium in Round 7 of the 2025 AFL season, storming home with 12 consecutive goals to claim a 17.15 (117) to 12.7 (79) victory and solidify their top-four credentials.

Trailing by 29 points late in the second quarter, the Suns flipped the contest on its head after halftime, slamming through 6.6 to 0.1 in a dominant third quarter that broke the Swans’ resistance.

Damien Hardwick’s side ran rampant out of the middle, winning clearances 15-3 in the third term to seize total control.

Jarrod Witts was immense in the ruck with 18 disposals and six clearances, while Bailey Humphrey starred with four goals, including a booming effort from the centre square.

Ben King continued his outstanding form with five goals, moving to the top of the Coleman Medal race.

Touk Miller (24 disposals) and Noah Anderson (22) were key drivers after halftime, with Daniel Rioli (21 disposals, two goals) adding crucial run and creativity from half-back.

For Sydney Swans, it was a tale of two halves. Chad Warner (two goals) and James Rowbottom (best on ground in the first half) helped build a commanding early lead, but the Swans fell apart after the main break, unable to match the Suns’ midfield intensity and crumbling under turnover pressure.

After a strong first quarter where they dominated clearances and surged ahead, the Swans’ ball use deteriorated badly, leading to a flood of Suns goals.

The result sets up a blockbuster clash next week against Brisbane, with Gold Coast now boasting a 5-1 record. Meanwhile, Sydney falls to 2-5 and faces a critical fortnight to keep their finals hopes alive.
