Giants surge past Saints with third-quarter blitz in AFL Round 5
Greater Western Sydney have flexed their attacking muscle in scorching conditions at Norwood Oval, outclassing St Kilda by 28 points to climb back into the top four in Round 5 of the 2025 AFL season.
Led by a five-goal haul from captain Toby Greene, the Giants exploded in the third term to set up a 16.14 (110) to 12.10 (82) win.
After a tight and evenly contested first half, the Giants blew the game wide open with an eight-goal burst in the third quarter, extending their lead to 50 points at the final change.
While St Kilda kicked the first three majors of the last quarter to threaten a comeback, the Giants steadied and were never seriously challenged.
Greene was the focal point up forward, with strong support from Aaron Cadman and Jake Stringer, who slotted two goals apiece.
Jesse Hogan and Jake Riccardi also added two each in a spread of goalkicking power. Behind the ball, Lachie Ash (33 disposals) and Lachie Whitfield (24 disposals) controlled the tempo and launched repeated counterattacks.
St Kilda had their moments, particularly through Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, who starred with 24 disposals and three goals, and Cooper Sharman, who also booted three. Jack Sinclair and Marcus Windhager battled hard but the Saints couldn’t match the Giants’ third-quarter surge.
With the result, the Giants move to 4-1 and continue to build premiership momentum, while the Saints drop to 3-2 and face an uphill battle to stay in touch with the top eight.
