AFL: Jeremy Cameron injured as Geelong down Melbourne
In the midst of a thrilling round 15 AFL match between Geelong and Melbourne on Thursday night, Jeremy Cameron suffered an unfortunate incident that forced him to be stretchered off the field. Early on in the game, Geelong had already scored the first two goals at GMHBA Stadium when a teammate, Gary Rohan, accidentally collided with Cameron during a marking contest in the first quarter.
The collision was significant, resulting in Cameron being immediately knocked unconscious and prompting a temporary halt in the game while medical attention was provided. Concern spread across the field, with Hamish McLachlan expressing worry for Cameron and Geelong Cats during his commentary on Channel 7. He mentioned that Rohan stood alongside his injured teammate, indicating the gravity of the situation.

Witnessing the collision firsthand, Abbey Holmes described it as a forceful impact that left Cameron motionless. Alister Nicholson noted how Geelong players swiftly gathered around Rohan, acknowledging the natural shock he must have experienced from the incident. Sarah Jones, a commentator from Fox Footy, referred to the injury as distressing and the collision as terrible.
In response to the severity of the situation, the game was temporarily paused for approximately 10 minutes while medical professionals carefully attended to Cameron and eventually transported him off the field using a stretcher and medicab. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Cameron managed to offer a reassuring thumbs-up to the concerned spectators as he was being taken to the hospital.
Following Cameron’s injury, Geelong activated their substitute, Jack Bowes, who entered the game as a replacement. Despite the setback, Gary Rohan managed to kick Geelong’s third goal shortly after the incident, helping them maintain a lead of 22 (3.4) to 13 (2.1) against Melbourne at the end of the first quarter. However, Melbourne Demons fought back and gained a one-point advantage (32-31) by halftime.
