Round 11: Geelong Cats v GWS Giants preview
Both the Geelong Cats and GWS Giants will be looking to break a run of three consecutive losses when they face off at GMHBA Stadium this Saturday in round 11 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.
At home, the Cats come in as favourites at -181.82 with PlayUp, while the Giants are slight underdogs at +165. The handicap has been set at 13.5 points.
Last Thursday, Geelong conceded some 164 points en route to a 64-point thumping against the Gold Coast Suns in Darwin. After a close first quarter, the Cats fell away sharply, conceding 15 majors to three up to three-quarter-time before scoring some late consolation goals.
After starting the season 7-0, the Cats have come right back to the pack. While the they enter round 11 in third place, Chris Scott’s men are yet to beat any of the current top-eight sides.
Expect a few changes for Geelong this week. Key forward pair Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins are both available to return, while key defender Sam De Koning should also be back after being a late change against the Suns.
GWS also suffered defeat last Saturday, going down to the Western Bulldogs by 27 points at ENGIE Stadium. After keeping the Dogs goalless for the first quarter, the Giants managed just four goals for the rest of the match, while the Bulldogs’ inaccuracy ultimately flattered Adam Kingsley’s side.
Sitting in third spot after round seven, the Giants have since tumbled down the ladder to sit in sixth. At -111.11 to make the top four with top AFL bookmakers, they are hard to gauge, and a loss this Saturday could push them out of the top eight.
Unfortunately for the Giants, key defender Jack Buckley will miss this week after suffering a calf injury against the Dogs, while small forward Darcy Jones is out with a hamstring injury. However, Leek Aleer is tipped to return to the backline after passing the concussion protocol.

Geelong v Giants Rd 11 predictions
Despite being known as one of the toughest away trips in the AFL, the Giants have won their past three games at GMHBA Stadium. However, their attacking potency is a concern at the moment, as they had just two goalscorers against the Dogs and average just 58 points over their last three weeks. The return of several key-position players should prove the difference for the Cats, so back them to win by less than 40 points at +110 with Neds.
With 21 goals in 10 matches, Geelong small forward Tyson Stengle is the highest-scoring small forward in the AFL this season. Despite the Cats’ poor form, he has scored nine goals in the past three weeks. Stengle has five goals in his last two matches against the Giants, so back him to continue his good form with three or more majors at +170 with PlayUp.
Averaging a career-high 29 disposals per game in 2024, rebounding defender Lachie Whitfield has been everywhere for the Giants as their main ball-carrier. Coming off a 31-disposal match against the Bulldogs, the 29-year-old has now collected over 30 touches in five matches this year. Three of his last four matches against the Cats have passed the 30-disposal mark, so back him to reach that figure once again at -111.11 with Bet365.
