No.12 seed Taylor Fritz takes on No.20 seed Frances Tiafoe in an all-American US Open semi-final on Saturday (AEST).
Coming into New York, Fritz had nothing to show for himself on hard courts over the past six months.
He hit the ground running in New York, however, beating the dangerous Matteo Berrettini in the second round before dispatching No.8 seed Casper Ruud and soon-to-be world No.2 Alexander Zverev in his last two matches.
Tiafoe’s run of form dates back to Wimbledon, where he came to life in a tough five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz.
He built nicely with a quarter-final in Atlanta and a semi-final in Washington before hitting top gear in Cincinnati, where he beat three top-20 players en route to his maiden Masters 1000 final.
Here in New York, he has kept up his level.
After seeing off Aleksandr Kovacevic and Alexander Shevchenko in the first two rounds, he then prevailed against Ben Shelton before eliminating the in-form Alexei Popyrin and world No.9 Grigor Dimitrov.
