Fremantle Dockers vs Western Bulldogs AFL Round 7 preview

The Fremantle Dockers are looking to break a run of three consecutive losses as they host the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night in round seven of the 2024 AFL Premiership season.

Last Saturday, it was a horror show for the Dockers, as they fell to the West Coast Eagles by 37 points. Heavily favoured by AFL bookmakers against last year’s wooden spooners, the Dockers gave up the first seven goals of the match and never recovered, as the final score ultimately flattered Justin Longmuir’s team.

After starting the season 3-0, hopes had risen around the potential of the Dockers this year, but their recent form has just been a reminder of why they have made finals just once in the past eight years.

On the selection front, expect plenty of changes to the side this week, with defender Heath Chapman and forward pair Michael Frederick and Sam Switkowski all returning from injury. Experienced tall forward Matt Taberner is also expected to return to the side in place of Jye Amiss, who was concussed against the Eagles. Players such as Sam Sturt, Neil Erasmus and Jaeger O’Meara are all under pressure after their poor efforts last Saturday.

On the other hand, the Western Bulldogs responded after a couple of poor weeks as they comprehensively dealt with the St Kilda Saints by 60-point last Thursday. A seven-goal opening term set the scene as Luke Beveridge’s side ran away with the match. Defender Bailey Dale was excellent with 39 disposals and a goal, while star forward Aaron Naughton kicked six goals.

Also sitting 3-3, the Dogs have struggled with inconsistency this year, winning and losing games by big margins. They are set to be boosted by the return of inside midfielder Tom Liberatore from concussion protocol, but don’t expect many more changes after their best performance of the season.

After starting the season in excellent shape, the Fremantle Dockers’ attacking worries have now become a major concern as they have not kicked over 70 points in the past four rounds. Coming off a nine-day break, travel should be less of a concern for the Dogs, who have also won four of their past six at the venue. While backing the Bulldogs has been risky throughout this year, they offer good value as underdogs at +100.

With the return of Sean Darcy in the ruck, Fremantle tall Luke Jackson has now been forced into spending much more time forward. Against the Eagles, he was their most dangerous forward on a quiet day, and he has spent plenty of time forward in the past playing as the second ruck. Expecting a response after their terrible performance, back Jackson to kick two or more goals at +110.

After starting the year in the VFL and a facing one-match stint as the sub in round four, Bulldogs veteran Jack Macrae returned to his best against the Saints collecting 30 disposals. Playing on the wing with a bit of time in the middle, the 29-year-old has always found a way to collect the ball and averages 29 disposals per game against the Dockers. With clear conditions forecast, expect Macrae to form a key part of the Dogs movement chains, collecting 30 or more disposals at +150 with PlayUp.
