Fremantle v Gold Coast match preview
Closing out round 15 in the AFL, Fremantle return to Optus Stadium this Sunday to face the Gold Coast Suns in a must-win match for both sides.
After a dominant away win over the Demons in round 12, Fremantle were dismantled by the Bulldogs in round 14. The Dockers cling to eighth spot on the AFL leader, but there are a host of chasers threatening to hunt them down.
Freo employ a high-disposal strategy which can open up opposing sides if left unchecked. The downside of this game plan is that Freo rely on primarily on handpasses to move the ball and are susceptible to pressure.
Veteran Fremantle forward Michael Walters is out for the next month with a hamstring injury. Heath Chapman has recovered from his own hamstring niggle, while key defender Joshua Draper has been dropped. Hugh Davies, Tom Emmett, Neil Erasmus, and Corey Wagner have all been included in the extended squad for Sunday’s matchup.
The Suns struggled to hit the scoreboard in their round 14 loss to the Saints, registering a mere 48 points. This continues their hot and cold form.
The eternal knock on the Suns is their inability to win on the road, and they are longshots with online bookies to reverse this trend in the west. Gold Coast entered the top eight with big home wins over the Cats and Bombers in the past month, and they can return there if they spring the upset this week.
Suns coach Damien Harwick has made a raft of changes for this contest, omitting Brayden Fiorini, Nick Holman, Jed Walker, and Ned Moyle. Ben King will miss due to knee soreness. Wil Powell, Jake Rogers, Sam Day, Jarrod Witts, Brandon Ellis, Lloyd Johnston, Alex Davies, and Hewago Oea have all been drafted into the extended squad.

Fremantle v Gold Coast predictions
While the Suns have struggled on the road this season, they look unlikely to be blown away by a Freo outfit that has the worst attack of any team in the top 10. It is almost impossible to tip Gold Coast straight-up away from home, but there is value in backing Fremantle to win by 1-39 points at $2.10 on PlayUp.
This promises to be a low-scoring affair if the Suns can bring the pressure and stymie Freo’s ball movement. AFL betting sites have set the match total line at a stingy 157.5 points ($1.90), but this might be a dour and scrappy game that struggles to get beyond that figure.
The absence of Walters might open attacking opportunities for Freo forward Sam Switkowski, who hit the scoreboard and looked dangerous in the big win over the Demons in round 12. Switkowski as an anytime goalkicker represents solid value at $2.25 on Neds.
