Fremantle v Brisbane is a blockbuster between two AFL teams with ambitions on a top-four finish, with Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium having potential finals repercussions.
Freo was clinical in their defeat of all-conquering Melbourne in round 11 and will be looking to take another top-four scalp when they host the Lions.
When analysing this game, the first thing we did was check the Perth weather forecast. The Dockers have been woeful on wet tracks of late and we would be very wary of their winning chance at the first sign of precipitation. The forecasters, who are never wrong, advise us that game day will be ‘mostly sunny’, with a 5% chance of rain. Say no more.
The Lions had too many guns for the brave Giants in round 11 and continued their high-scoring ways. Brisbane has broken 100 points in their last five matches, which is a sure-fire way to win games of footy.
The Lions have been almost unbeatable at home in recent times, but it will be interesting to see how they perform on the road against another genuine premiership contender. They were narrowly defeated by the middling Hawks in Tasmania, but were too good for the Swans in Sydney, so the jury is still out.
Key Match-up: Brodie v Bailey
Fremantle midfielder Will Brodie has announced himself as a champion player in season 2022. In the absence of Freo’s favourite son Nat Fyfe, Brodie has quietly amassed some of the best stats in the comp, averaging 28 disposals per game and 6.5 clearances. The humble 23-year-old is still learning his craft but can be confident that All Australian honours beckon.
Brisbane midfielder Zac Bailey is another youngster bursting with talent. Bailey is only 22 years old but has played every game in 2022 and posted some decent numbers. While not hitting the lofty heights of Brodie, Bailey plays second fiddle to the likes of Lachie Neale and Jarryd Lyons, both prodigious ball winners. The number 15 draft pick is bound to improve with the passage of time and potentially assume the role played by his illustrious teammates. Brodie versus Bailey is our key match-up here in a battle of the young guns.
Dockers v Lions tips & betting strategy
The Dockers are slight favourites here, with the line set at a miniscule 1.5 points. The total points line is set high at 161.5. The question here is can the Lions boot another 100 points? If they can, they will almost certainly emerge with the spoils.
Given the dry conditions, and Freo’s ability to smother Melbourne for two entire quarters in round 11, we are happy to ride the Dockers at the line here. Freo -1.5 points is our official tip. This line is available at Ladbrokes betting, and at other online bookmakers.
