France, Portugal set for EURO 2024 quarter-final grudge match
France secured their passage to the quarter-finals of EURO 2024 after beating Belgium 1-0 on Tuesday morning (AEST) in Dusseldorf.
In an encounter that was far from entertaining, Les Bleus made their breakthrough in the 85th minute when Jan Vertonghen sent a deflected shot past his goalkeeper to put France in front.
Albeit not as they envisioned it, France booked their place in the last eight of EURO 2024, where they will battle against 2016 champions Portugal.
Online bookmakers have France listed at +450 to win the European Championship, behind England (+350) and Spain ($5).
Meanwhile, Portugal advanced to the last eight of EURO 2024 after beating Slovenia 3-0 in post-match penalties.
Although the encounter ended in a goalless draw in both regular time and extra time, Portugal breezed past Slovenia on penalties to set up a rematch of the EURO 2016 final when they meet France in Hamburg on Friday night.
The hero of the penalty shootout was undeniably Diogo Costa, who made three priceless saves to give Portugal a fighting chance.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva converted their spot-kicks to guarantee Roberto Martinez’s men a place in the quarter-finals.
France enter the encounter as slight favourites at +125 with Marantelli Bet to beat Portugal (+225).
