Flemington track to suit Adelaide visitor
Adelaide trainer Ryan Balfour says he couldn’t think of a better track to run Balf’s Choice at in search of winning form.
Balf’s Choice, also an acceptor at Morphettville on Saturday, is set to run in the Brian Beattie Handicap (1400m) at Flemington where he will be ridden by Damien Oliver.
“I think he’ll need every bit of the 1400 metres but the big track at Flemington will be more suitable,” Balfour said.
“The lack of options over here with where his rating’s at basically indicates we have to do that.”
Saturday’s race is a heat of the VRC-CRV Winter Championships Series and Balfour the intention is to return for the final over 1600m at Flemington on July 7.
“He gives the impression that he’ll get further but 1600 metres has proven to be his best trip,” Balfour said.
“I couldn’t think of a better track for him than Flemington.”
Balf’s Choice strung together four wins in succession at the corresponding time 12 months ago before going on to capture the Balaklava and Seymour Cups in September and October.
Balfour again has Balaklava Cup aspirations and hopes the gelding can develop into a spring contender.
He said Balf’s Choice ran exceptionally well first-up but had things go against him at his next two starts.
A mini freshen-up in the Adelaide Hills and a strong gallop at Morphettville on Tuesday has Balf’s Choice on track for his Flemington assignment.
“I think Saturday will be a nice test for what could be a more suitable test in a couple of weeks,” Balfour said.
“Damien Oliver will ride and it will be great to get his input on tactics, gear changes and the like.
“I’d love to see him attacking the line on Saturday knowing he wants a fraction further.”
Balfour, who is recovering from a foot injury, has further members of his stable earmarked for trips to Melbourne.
“The team is starting to fire up,” he said.
“We’ve got a few to launch and horses like Mystified and Embassy Lil are capable of going over.
“We’ll find the right races for them hopefully.”
