The Bombers will be keen to build on their impressive winning start to the season when they host the Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium in a round two AFL clash on Sunday.
Essendon were far too strong for the Hawks in round one while the Suns drew a tough assignment and were no match for the Swans at Heritage Bank Stadium.
The Bombers grew in confidence as their game against Hawthorn progressed and completely dominated the game’s second half. Scores were locked midway through the second quarter, but then the floodgates opened, and the Bombers blew their opponents off the park to record a 59-point victory at the final whistle.
New coach Brad Scott will be encouraged by the ruthlessness shown by his young squad and while some key stats were surprisingly close, the Bombers led on inside 50s, disposals and total clearances.
The Suns had a rough afternoon against the Swans in round one, going down by 49 points. The Gold Coast struggled to generate inside 50s and were well picked apart by Sydney’s uncontested possession strategy.
They face another tough match-up here and will need to find improvement to be competitive, particularly in their disposal efficiency. They took a paltry three marks inside 50 against the Swans and not many games can be won with such a meagre return.
Key match-up: Draper v Witts
Essendon ruck Sam Draper added some goal kicking prowess to his game in round one, booting 2.0 against the Hawks while sharing the tap out duties with Andrew Phillips. Draper has the speed and agility to be a handful for any opponent and his side will welcome his forays inside 50 where he can climb high and either mark or spoil for the small forwards and create opportunities at ground level.
Gold Coast ruck Jarrod Witts battled manfully against the Swans and was close to best on field. He won an astonishing 51 hit outs, gathered 25 disposals, and took five marks. The towering Witts has struggled with injuries in recent years but looks fully fit and ready for a huge season. Midfielders love first use of the football, and a focused Witts might be the most effective hit out man in the AFL.
Bombers v Suns betting strategy & free tips
The Bombers go into this contest as warm favourites with the line set at 10.5 points with AU bookmakers. They appear to have too many advantages to give the Suns much of a chance, so we are obliged to take that generous line. Essendon will be suited at Marvel Stadium and will be full of confidence following the demolition of the Hawks.
Bombers -10.5
