Essendon survive West Coast scare in AFL Good Friday thriller
Essendon have escaped with a thrilling two-point victory over a plucky West Coast side at Optus Stadium, overcoming a sluggish start and a late surge to claim their third straight win in the 2025 AFL season.
Returning key forward Peter Wright was the hero, booting six goals in his season debut to steer the Bombers to an 11.11 (77) to 11.9 (75) triumph on Good Friday.
The Bombers were stunned early as Jake Waterman caught fire for the Eagles, kicking four first-quarter goals to help the home side build a 28-point lead.
Jeremy McGovern was immense in his return from injury, collecting 23 disposals and dominating as an intercept defender.
But Wright ignited the Bombers in the second quarter, kicking back-to-back goals and setting up a rally that saw Dylan Shiel and Nic Martin join the charge.
Martin finished with 26 disposals and a clutch fourth-quarter goal to give Essendon their first lead of the match.
The Dons’ midfield gradually took control through Zach Merrett (26 disposals, seven clearances), with Archie Perkins chipping in with two vital third-quarter goals that helped level the scores heading into the final change.
Ruckman Sam Draper also played a crucial role, kicking a key goal in the third term before limping off early in the fourth with a worrying lower leg injury.
With fellow ruck Nick Bryan already sidelined, Draper’s injury looms large for the Bombers moving forward. Xavier Duursma also finished the game sore after a hit to the ribs.
West Coast, who were coming off a heavy loss to Carlton, showed significant improvement.
Young gun Elijah Hewett impressed with 22 disposals and two goals, while Jack Williams slotted three majors. Despite the heartbreak, the Eagles showed signs of progress as they pushed the Bombers to the brink.
Essendon’s ability to rally after a poor start and seal victory on the road highlights their growing maturity, but they’ll now await injury updates on Draper and Duursma ahead of Round 7.
