EPL raving about Postecoglou’s Spurs after big win over Burnley

Ange Poctecoglou
Former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is making quite an impression at Tottenham Hotspur.

The appointment of Ange Postecolgou as Tottenham Hotspur manager was a divisive one among the club’s supporters, but any fears about the Australian’s suitability for the job appear to have been erased in the early weeks of the 2023-24 English Premier League season.

Spurs are undefeated in second place on the EPL table, with their 5-2 win over Burnley on Sunday (AEST) taking their record to three wins and a draw from four games.

But it isn’t just the results that have sent tongues wagging in the UK.

Once lauded as one of the most eye-catching teams in English football, Spurs had become a tough watch in recent years under hyper-pragmatic managers such as Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Now Postecoglou – the first Aussie to manage an EPL team – has brought his signature possession-based game to the big stage, and the early signs are promising.

Perhaps the greatest example of the Tottenham revolution so far came in their fifth goal against Burnley.

It started with some clever footwork from Cristian Romero on his own byline and ended with a smart finish from Son Heung-min, but it was the poise and intent in between that highlighted what Postecoglou is all about.

What might be most remarkable is that this is happening after the club sold one of its greatest-ever strikers, Harry Kane, to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

Perhaps taking away such a big focal point has helped open up the Spurs attack, making it a little easier for Postecoglou to establish his brand.

We may never know the answer to that question, but what we do know is that Tottenham are heading in the right direction with Ange at the helm.

Next up for Spurs in the EPL is a home clash with newly promoted Sheffield United.

They will head into that fixture as the shortest-priced favourites of the weekend, paying $1.25 with online bookmakers.

In outright markets, Tottenham now sit on the fourth line of EPL title betting at $26, behind Manchester City ($1.45), Arsenal ($6) and Liverpool ($7).
