England’s long wait for a major trophy continues after they were beaten 2-1 by Spain on Monday morning (AEST) in the final of EURO 2024.

Favourites with online bookmakers, Spain overcame their first-half jitters in Berlin to take the lead soon after the restart through Nico Williams.

With England on the edge, Gareth Southgate brought in Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, who equalised for the Three Lions in the 73rd minute.

Nevertheless, Spain sealed the win four minutes to stoppage time through Mikel Oyarzabal.

The Spanish dominated the tournament from start to finish, defeating established sides like Croatia, Italy, Germany, France and England on their way to lifting a record fourth European Championship trophy.

Meanwhile, England return to the drawing board after losing a second consecutive EURO final.

In charge of the Three lions for eight years, Southgate has now lost two major finals and reached the last four of the FIFA World Cup.

“To get to another final… it was a privilege to have the opportunity. But to come up short is hard at the moment,” the England manager said.

When asked about his future after the defeat, Southgate replied:

“Now is not the time for me to speak about that. I need to talk to the right people and give myself a bit of time.”
