England vs Slovakia EURO 2024 preview
England have a great chance of advancing into the quarterfinals of the EURO 2024 when they face Slovakia on Sunday evening in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
The Three Lions registered a marginal 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening match, before drawing 1-1 against Denmark in Matchday 2.
Their final match saw Gareth Southgate’s side register a disappointing 0-0 draw with Slovenia.
However, despite enduring a shaky start to their campaign, England still finished top of Group C with five points, two points ahead of Denmark and Slovenia, who finished second and third respectively.
Despite making a slow start in the Euros, scoring just twice in the group stages, England have managed to avoid a potentially early exit from the competition. This is because finishing as group winners has helped them avoid heavyweights like Germany, France, Spain and Portugal in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Slovakia booked their place in the last 16 after finishing third in Group E behind Belgium and surprise group winners Romania.
Pooled alongside Romania, Belgium, and Ukraine, the group proved to be among the most competitive, as all four teams closed the group on four points each.
Having advanced as one of the best third-placed teams, Slovakia have a tough assignment against England, who are seeking to end their trophy drought that has lasted for nearly six decades.
England vs Slovakia team news
Uncertainty remains over the availability of Phil Foden, after the Manchester City midfielder temporarily left the England camp due to a pressing family matter.
Should he fail to return, Foden could be replaced by Anthony Gordon on the left flank.
Gareth Southgate could also opt for Kobbie Mainoo in place of Conor Gallagher, who was far from convincing against Slovenia.
Luke Shaw, who has been sidelined with injury since February, will be available for selection after training this week.
Meanwhile, Slovakia are at full strength with no injury woes ahead of their last-16 bout with England.
England vs Slovakia betting predictions
England remains favourites to lift the coveted prize in Germany, paying +350 outright odds at Marantelli Bet.
The star-studded England team has a wealth of experience, whereas Slovakia have no attacking threat.
Furthermore, the Three Lions enjoy a fine run against the Slovaks, unbeaten with five wins and a draw. Despite their nervous displays in the group stage, England could come to the fore in knockouts. Expect Gareth Southgate’s side to control this encounter, with online bookmakers paying +120 for England to win both halves.
With 64 goals for his country, England skipper Harry Kane has so far scored once in EURO 2024. Arguably England’s biggest goal-scoring threat, Neds is offering great value of +110 for Harry Kane in the anytime goalscorer market.
Should they advance, England will face either Switzerland or Italy in the quarter-finals.
