Egyptian Symbol defies betting in Toy Show

Egyptian Symbol (L) made the most of a class edge to win the Toy Show Quality at Randwick.

Egyptian Symbol has defied top weight and a betting drift to win the Group Three Toy Show Quality at Randwick.

After opening at $4.40 on Saturday, Egyptian Symbol eased to $8.50 with Zestful firming from $9 to $6 equal favouritism with Luvaluva and Nettoyer backed from $8.50 to $6,50.

Tim Clark sent the Bjorn Baker-trained Egyptian Symbol to the front under her 58kg and she held off all challenges with Zestful a short head second and Nettoya edging Luvaluva out of third.

She had a class edge and a fitness edge on the field and I can’t believe the price she was,” Baker said.

“I said to Tim to put her where she wants to be and that was the key.

“It was going to take a very good horse to chase her down.

“She is scheduled to be served this spring and I would like to get her earnings up to a million dollars.

“She’s pretty close to that now.”

Egyptian Symbol has earned almost $875,000 and could have more than one chance to earn more with her owner, Cressfield Stud’s Bruce Neill, hinting half-jokingly her racing career may not be over.

“I have her booked her into a stallion but who knows?” he said.

“Maybe the trainer might keep her going.”
