One of rugby league’s best rivalries will have another chapter written on Saturday afternoon when the Parramatta Eels host the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Parramatta were flogged 26-0 by South Sydney in their last start, while the Bulldogs were heavily beaten 42-18 across the ditch against the Warriors.
Fans saw all the warts come to the fore with Parramatta in their loss to the Rabbitohs. Their ruck defence was loose, which meant Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell had a field day through the middle, and on the edges they constantly made the wrong defensive decisions and the Bunnies had a field day. Souths have a record in recent seasons of putting big scores on Parramatta, so is it just a case of having a bogey team or are there deeper issues?
The Eels are a hot favourite at the $1.38 price, but in their last match these two teams played, the Eels produced a putrid display and lost by 30 points. They’ll be keen to not see a repeat of that, but the much safer punting option would be to take them at the 1-12 margin at $2.95 with BetOnline. Also, Maika Sivo should get on the scoresheet; his record at CommBank Stadium is too good to be ignored.
Canterbury took a bit of a step back with a 42-18 loss last week against the Warriors, but the scoreline looks a lot worse than how the first 73 minutes of the game went. Three tries in the last seven minutes saw the score blow out, but for the most part they were right in the game. The Warriors at home has shown to be a tough game, so maybe the Doggies are better placed to cause another upset than most of us think?
The +8.5 points will attract plenty of attention from punters for a few reasons. A local derby tends to throw up unusual results, while the Bulldogs boast an ability to steal tries from teams with early kicks for Josh Addo-Carr. On a dry afternoon, Matt Burton will get the conditions he needs to find ‘The Foxx’, so back Addo-Carr to get over the stripe.
Key matchup: Dylan Brown vs Matt Burton
These two five-eighths are both having terrific seasons and the result of this game falls on their shoulders. Canterbury rely heavily on Burton’s boot to get them points or in a position to strike, while Brown will have to step up in the absence of Mitchell Moses.
