Parramatta Eels v Penrith Panthers R23 preview
The ‘Battle of the West’ will wrap up Friday night football in Parramatta with the Eels hosting the Penrith Panthers in round 23 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.
The Panthers won their fourth match in a row last Sunday, narrowly beating the Knights in Penrith. The defending premiers are just two points behind the Storm, who sit on top of the NRL ladder, and they will be aiming to secure as many wins as possible to earn another minor premiership this year.
The Eels snapped a whopping six-game losing streak when they beat the Warriors in New Zealand in round 22. They are two wins ahead of the Tigers, who sit in last place on the ladder, and Parramatta will be determined not to be left with the wooden spoon at the season’s end.
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has named Daine Laurie (concussion) to return at fullback in place of Isaiah Iongi, while he awaits the return of first-choice custodian Dylan Edwards (knee) and star forward James Fisher-Harris (groin) from injury.
Eels interim coach Trent Barrett has made one change to his side, replacing Luca Moretti with Matt Doorey on the interchange.

Parramatta Eels v Penrith Panthers predictions
Penrith have beaten the Eels in three of their last five matches, and two of those were in the 2022 NRL finals series. When these two sides met earlier this year, the Eels had halfback Mitchell Moses along with forwards Junior Paulo and J’maine Hopgood, but they still lost by 10 points. As the Eels have lost each of their last five games against teams on a winning streak, the Panthers should record a dominant win by 13 points or more at $1.62 odds with top NRL bookmakers.
Although Penrith winger Brian To’o has not found the in-goal area in the last fortnight, it follows a super run of five tries in the previous three weeks. This weekend he will be taking on Eels rookie Jake Tago, who has missed several tackles early in his career and was sin-binned in his last two matches. Should Tago’s poor discipline continue, To’o will likely score two or more tries at $2.85 with Bet365.
Nathan Cleary’s return at halfback for the Panthers has coincided with a serious change in the way his side is playing. Penrith have led at half-time in their last two clashes before going on to win. They will be expected to continue that strong form and completed the half-time/full-time double again at $1.24 with rugby league bookies.
