Dylan Brown linked to NRL rivals and Rugby Union switch
Parramatta Eels playmaker Dylan Brown has thrown the NRL into turmoil with reports indicating he is actively seeking offers from rival clubs and even rugby union teams.
Despite having a contract option that could keep him at Parramatta until 2031, Brown’s management has begun exploring opportunities for the 2026 NRL season and beyond, labelling him a “franchise player” in communications with potential suitors.
Brown’s current deal, worth nearly $1 million per season, allows him to trigger an extension by Round 10 of the 2025 NRL season.
However, his reluctance to commit long-term has left the Eels scrambling to secure their star player’s future.
This move follows months of speculation about Brown’s intentions, which intensified when the club failed to reach an agreement to remove the player options embedded in his contract.
These options have now become a contentious issue for Parramatta, as they also affect other key players, including halfback Mitchell Moses and centre Will Penisini.
The uncertainty surrounding Brown is a significant blow to new coach Jason Ryles, who already faces the challenge of rebuilding a team plagued by injuries and off-field disruptions.
Brown’s availability on the open market has reportedly drawn interest from clubs like the Roosters, Warriors, and the prospective Perth franchise, while rugby union teams have also been approached as part of a broader effort to gauge his value.
The development comes during a period of upheaval for the Eels, following a difficult 12 months that saw the departure of Clint Gutherson, the sacking of coach Brad Arthur, and serious injuries to both Brown and Moses.
Brown’s management, led by Chris Orr, has emphasised the rarity of such a high-calibre player becoming available, describing the situation as a unique opportunity for Rugby League clubs to secure a game-changing talent.
An email sent to potential suitors outlined plans to organize meetings with Brown to discuss his future.
This proactive approach signals a growing willingness to explore options outside Parramatta, despite Brown’s earlier assurances about his focus on performance and loyalty to the club.
Parramatta’s contractual strategy has come under intense scrutiny, with critics pointing to the risks associated with player options.
Last year, the Eels lost promising junior Blaize Talagi to Penrith after he declined to activate a clause in his deal.
The club’s failure to mitigate similar risks in Brown’s contract highlights an ongoing vulnerability that could have long-term consequences.
For now, Brown’s future remains uncertain, and the Eels face mounting pressure to address the growing instability.
As negotiations continue, the spotlight remains firmly on the star playmaker and the club’s ability to navigate what could be a defining moment in their season and beyond, as they are currently a $34 hope with the 2025 NRL Premiership with the top NRL bookmakers.
