Round 14: Dragons v Tigers match preview

The Wests Tigers are coming off the bye to take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium this Friday night to kick off round 14 of the 2024 NRL Premiership.

The Tigers have not won since Aidan Sezer kicked a field goal to beat the Eels in round four this season. Desperation will be at an all-time high with the club needing a win to avoid falling back to 17th place on the NRL ladder.

On the other side of the field, the Dragons are fighting for a spot in the top eight following last weekend’s win over the Panthers in Penrith. A big win over the struggling Tigers could elevate the home side as high as fourth if other results around the league favour them.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall will be without David Klemmer (suspension) and Isaiah Papali’i (ankle), while Declan Casey, Jake Simpkin, and Josh Feledy have all been dropped.

Justin Olam returns from suspension to partner Charlie Staines in the centres, while Alex Lobb makes his NRL debut on the wing. Alex Twal starts in the front row, Alex Seyfarth in the second row, and Justin Matamua locks the scrum. Brent Naden and Reuben Porter both return via the bench.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has named an unchanged line-up following their round 13 win. However, captain Ben Hunt, backrower Jaydn Su’A, and winger Zac Lomax are all named in the reserves and could back up 48 hours after the State of Origin opener on Wednesday.

Dragons v Tigers match predictions

Not only have the Tigers lost their last eight matches this season, but they’ve also lost four of their last five clashes with the Dragons by 12 points or less. However, St George’s representative trio are not expected to back up and take on a well-rested Tigers outfit. With Jahream Bula, Justin Olam, and Lachlan Galvin in the side, the Tigers should be able to surprise the Dragons and win by 1-12 points at great odds with Neds ($4).

Without the Origin trio for the Dragons, and with key forwards missing for the Tigers, point-scoring will be difficult for both sides. Nine of the last 10 matches for the Tigers have finished below the total points line, and it’s highly unlikely this one will exceed 47.5 ($1.90).

In his last match against the Cowboys, Tigers fullback Bula broke a seven-game try-scoring drought despite failing to break any lines or tackles. When these two sides met earlier this year, he recorded three tackle breaks without a line break. Having been fully rested, he should be primed to notch his fifth try of the season ($2.95).
