St George Illawarra v Canterbury preview

The St George Illawarra Dragons will be looking to secure a spot inside the top eight this Saturday night when they host the Canterbury Bulldogs in round 23 of the 2024 NRL season.

Last Saturday, the Dragons produced one of their best performances of the season to beat the Storm by two points in Melbourne. In a low-scoring contest, second-rower Jaydn Su’A was a standout with two tries as they secured their first win over the Storm in Victoria since 1999.

As a result, the Dragons have jumped into eighth spot on the NRL ladder. But given their inconsistencies and terrible points differential, it is no surprise to see them entering this clash as underdogs at $2.20 with Unibet.

Sticking with a winning formula, Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has named the same 17 from last Saturday. Winger Mat Feagai moves into 18th man as he returns from concussion protocols.

The Bulldogs were also successful in round 22, beating the Raiders by four points at Belmore. Led by two tries each from Stephen Crichton and Josh Addo-Carr, the Dogs never trailed in what was another strong defensive display.

Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has also named an unchanged lineup this week, with prop Josh Curran selected despite suffering a shoulder injury against the Raiders.

Dragons v Bulldogs betting strategy

Despite entering this clash in stellar form, a major concern for the Bulldogs has been their away form. Canterbury hold a 2-8 record on the road this season, while the Dragons have won five of their last seven home matches, including two at this venue. Coming in as underdogs, the Dragons offer solid value for the win at $2.20 odds.

As the two lowest-scoring sides in the top eight, expect this match to turn into an arm-wrestle. The Bulldogs are the second-best defensive side in the NRL and have gone under the total points line in seven of their last eight matches. If the Dragons defend anything like they did last week, this one should go under the total points line of 47.5 points at $1.90 with leading sports betting sites.
