Dolphins vs Newcastle Knights NRL Round 8 preview

Sunday afternoon football for round eight of the 2024 NRL Premiership kicks off in Brisbane with the dynamic Dolphins hosting an injured Newcastle Knights side at Suncorp Stadium.

The Dolphins have had a brilliant start to the season, winning four of their opening six matches, with their only losses coming in the Queensland Derby’s against the Broncos and Cowboys. Meanwhile, the Knights have struggled through the early stages of the season, with matters only becoming worse with captain and fullback Kalyn Ponga ruled out with injury until round 22 with a foot injury.

Newcastle Knights head coach Adam O’Brien has opted to replace the injured Ponga with David Armstrong, who will make his NRL debut. Jack Hetherington (suspended) will be on the sidelines, with Jed Cartwright named to play his second game for the club from the interchange bench.

Dolphins head coach Wayne Bennett has made one change to his interchange bench, with Kurt Donoghoe replacing Sean O’Sullivan.

Dolphins vs Newcastle Knights betting prediction

The Dolphins will start as favourites in this match, although there has been support for the Knights, who have been backed from $3 to $2.75 early with the top NRL bookmakers.

The last time these two sides met was at Optus Stadium in Perth last season, where Knights fullback Ponga scored a try from two line breaks and eight tackle breaks, made a line break assist, and set up two further tries to secure a narrow two-point victory. Without Ponga, the Knights struggled to win their first match against the Dolphins and have lost their last four matches away from Newcastle. Having covered the line in each of their last six matches at Suncorp Stadium, the Dolphins are a safe bet to win and cover the -7.5 point line ($1.90).

Jamayne Isaako’s resurgence of form under coach Bennett at the Dolphins has resulted in him scoring at least one try in eight of the Dolphins’ last twelve matches. He has also scored a whopping five tries in just two matches against the Knights, including a hat-trick in eight minutes in their last match. Isaako is a great value bet to score 2+ tries again this weekend ($3.15).

For the Knights to record any points on the weekend it will have to be through New South Wales Blues centre Bradman Best who has scored in each of his last two matches this season. He will line up against Dolphins centre Jake Averillo who is lighter and less physically imposing than Best who is another great value play as any any-time try scorer ($2.85).
