US Open 2024: Djokovic vs Popyrin preview
Novak Djokovic takes on Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the US Open, for what will be the third meeting between these two in Grand Slams this year.
Djokovic is back to his former self after struggling for a good portion of this year.
The first few months of 2024 were rough for the legend, but recently, he has been playing close to his best.
He made the Wimbledon final, won the Olympics, and is now playing solid tennis at the US Open. The first two rounds have been decent for him, but in line with his usual slower start, after which he ramps up.
Djokovic’s serve, though, remains an issue for him. He has served poorly two matches in a row now, something he will need to clean up in the coming matches if he hopes to go deep.
Popyrin is a player the Serbian does not enjoy facing.
The Australian is playing the best tennis of his career this year, with his serve doing major damage. The forehand has also been firing on all cylinders since Montreal, which he won.
Popyrin is the prototype of a player who will do well in New York, especially on the bigger courts, which do not feature as much wind.
As this match is being played on Arthur Ashe, expect Popyrin to play excellently. If he does that, we’re going to get another very close match where the Aussie should take a set.
In Australia earlier this year, Popyrin won a set against Djokovic before getting beaten in four. He did the same thing at Wimbledon, again losing in four.
While Djokovic is playing much better right now, Popyrin is as well.
Djokovic’s rather problematic serve at this event will open up chances for his opponent, which is central to our prediction in this one.

US Open 2024: Djokovic vs Popyrin betting predictions
With everything we have seen from these two this year, it is clear this is going to be a tricky match for Djokovic. That makes a few bets very solid picks.
While Djokovic beating Popyrin 3-0 pays out a solid amount, it is not a great bet with the top online bookmakers as Popyrin should win at least one set.
His serve will make most of these sets close. It is not unreasonable to predict that he wins one of them, even in a tiebreak.
Djokovic struggling with his serve as badly as he did will give Popyrin chances in all sets, and he is bound to capitalise on one of those.
There are two ways to exploit this assumption.
The first one is a combination of over 3.5 sets or Popyrin winning a set, which is, in practical terms, the same bet. They pay out similarly as well.
Another tennis bet you could consider is the overall games, which at 33.5 pay out the same as Popyrin winning a set. This is an even safer option because even if Djokovic wins in three sets, the Aussie could push this over still.
Something like a 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 will cover this bet, and it is a strong chance of hitting. Both of their matches this year featured a tiebreak, which will likely happen in this one too.
