Wimbledon 2024: Djokovic v Musetti preview
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic squares off against 22-year-old Lorenzo Musetti early on Saturday (AEST), with the Italian playing in his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final.
Djokovic’s turnaround from knee surgery has been nothing short of remarkable. This time last month, the Serbian was going under the knife to fix a torn meniscus that forced him out of the French Open.
Now, he is through to his 49th major semi-final, while online bookies have him as second favourite to win the whole tournament.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion has received his fair share of luck over the past fortnight in London.
He began in typical fashion, moving through his opening three matches without hitting top gear. This produced a straight-sets win over qualifier Vit Kopriva, then a pair of four-setters against Brit Jacob Fearnley and Aussie Alexei Popyrin.
Djokovic then raced past No.15 seed Holger Rune in three one-sided sets. He even took the time to rebuke the crowd following his victory, taking exception to some of their cheering against him during the match.
Most recently, the 37-year-old received a walkover into the semi-finals, as Australia’s Alex de Minaur was forced to withdraw with a hip injury.
Musetti has done it much tougher. The Italian has gone to four or five sets in each of his five matches so far.
He began with a four-set clash against Constant Lestienne before winning an epic against compatriot Luciano Darderi in the fifth.
Francisco Comesana and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard were then dispatched in four sets before another marathon ensued against No.13 seed Taylor Fritz.
Musetti was a heavy underdog to defeat Fritz but defied the odds, powering home 6-1 in the final set to book his maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

Wimbledon 2024: Djokovic v Musetti predictions
Djokovic leads the pair’s head-to-head count 5-1, with the Serbian’s only loss coming in Monte-Carlo last year.
Anyone who follows Djokovic will know that he is historically vulnerable to upsets in Monte-Carlo, given the transition to clay and his schedule after the Australian Open.
Of the five times Djokovic has beaten Musetti, three have been straight-set wins. The other two have gone to five sets, with Djokovic winning the final two sets in emphatic fashion.
When the Belgrade-native is locked in, it is really no contest between him and Musetti.
Given the drama surrounding him this week courtesy of his post-match speech after playing Rune, plus the added motivation of coming back from knee surgery, you can count on Djokovic being locked in on Friday.
Back him to run through this one in straightforward fashion and book his place in Sunday’s final.
