Dettori purple patch continues in Sussex

Frankie Dettori.
Jockey Frankie Dettori has continued his sublime form in Group One races, winning the Sussex Stakes.

Too Darn Hot sealed his resurgence with victory in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Frankie Dettori continued his brilliant season with a confident ride on the John Gosden-trained three-year-old, who was sent off the even-money favourite for the mile prize.

Main market rival Circus Maximus kicked for home inside the two-furlong pole – but Dettori soon had him covered, having briefly been trapped in a pocket.

The Italian did not have to get serious with his mount once in front, as he backed up his recent success in the Prix Jean Prat for a second Group One triumph of the season.

Dettori has been in irresistible form this season and was winning his 11th Group One race since the end of May.

He said: “It’s not just Group Ones, the list of Group Ones I’ve won are amazing, massive races. I’ve had an amazing summer and long may it continue.

“John Gosden is the genius – he puts it on a plate for me and I do the rest.”

Gosden added of the winner: “He’s very fast, he’s shown his class here and in the Prix Jean Prat over seven furlongs, and proved all his two-year-old form is solid.

“It would have been quite fair to doubt him, but if he has running over the wrong trip off an interrupted preparation, then what do you expect?

“You’ve got races like the Moulin and the QEII, but you also have the sprints and a race I’m really toying with in my mind is the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

“A good seven-furlong horse loves the mile there (Santa Anita) – it’s a fast mile.”
