Demonstrate’s second crack at Straight Six

Godolphin gelding Demonstrate gets another chance at a stakes breakthrough in the Listed Straight Six at Flemington.

The four-year-old has been placed in four black-type races and returns for another shot at the Straight Six (1200m) on Saturday having been unplaced as favourite in the $120,000 race 12 months ago.

Demonstrate is a Flemington winner of a 1400m-benchmark 90 race during last year’s Melbourne Cup carnival while he has been out of the placings in his two attempts down the straight course.

To be ridden by Craig Newitt on Saturday, Demonstrate finished second in a barrier trial at Cranbourne 10 days ago.

He goes to his next assignment with four weeks since his last-start seventh in the VOBIS Gold Sprint at Caulfield.

Demonstrate is at $15 to give Godolphin’s new trainer Darren Beadman a first Melbourne city win after he went close with the filly Fragonard last Saturday at Caulfield.

“He has raced OK at Flemington but his best form there has been around the corner,” Beadman said.

“He trialled nicely on a heavy track at Cranbourne last week.

“There is no reason why the straight should present any problems to him, but it’s a small question mark.”

The Godolphin team also has Unbreakable engaged at Flemington, with the last-start Caulfield runner-up at $8.50 for the Carbine Club Handicap (1600m).

Perth sprinter Malibu Style is the $4.40 favourite to claim his second Melbourne Listed win this campaign in the Straight Six after taking out the Bel Esprit Stakes at Caulfield two starts ago.

Ruettiger, winner of the Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final at Flemington last winter, is on the second line of betting at $6.50 for his first start of the Lindsay Park stable.
