Demons declare Oliver, Gawn fit for must-win Blues clash
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has denied two of his stars are in doubt for their cut-throat semi-final against Carlton at the MCG on Friday night.
Goodwin assured media that captain Max Gawn will train fully this week and does not have a lingering toe complaint.
The 2021 AFL premiership coach also said his star midfielder Clayton Oliver would play, despite rumours surrounding knee soreness, following the Demons loss to Collingwood last Thursday.
“I’m not going to give out our medical report,” he said.
“I can confirm he’s going to train fully today. Both he and Clayton will train fully today and be available.
“I think every player is carrying certain things at certain times of the year, but it’s not going to slow either of these two down … they’ll train fully (on Tuesday) in preparation for the game.”
The Demons will be forced into several changes for the Blues’ game, with the much-publicised concussion incident forcing Angus Brayshaw out, while young forward Jacob van Rooyen has been suspended.
The Demons, particularly if Gawn is carrying an injury, will be tempted into recalling former Collingwood big man Grundy, who could also fill a hole down forward.
The Demons are also likely to have the option of recalling Ben Brown (knee) or Josh Schache for the the Carlton match.
Melbourne is a $1.65 favourite to defeat Carlton ($2.25) with online bookmakers, with the early line set at 7.5.
