Decision pending on Supido’s Sydney run

Victorian trainer Mick Kent is keeping a close eye on the Sydney weather for lightly raced sprinter Supido.

The Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday is on the five-year-old’s radar with the likelihood of a seven-day back-up into the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

Kent is happy to run Supido on a wet Randwick track but is concerned about the possibility of the meeting being held over depending on the weather.

NSW racing officials will meet to discuss contingency plans on Thursday, with Kent to make a decision on the same day.

“I’m a bit keen to go and back up in the Newmarket,” Kent said.

The trainer was originally going to tackle Saturday’s race and then the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 24, but that changed with the release of Newmarket weights on Tuesday with Supido getting 52kg.

“I’m really mindful that in the Newmarket he’s got a really good weight,” Kent said.

“He gets in very well but it looks a very good race also, better than last year.”

Kent was disappointed with Supido’s first-up tiring last behind Terravista in the Lightning Stakes on February 18, but said the horse was possibly too fresh.

That was his first outing since running third behind Black Heart Bart and Under The Louvre in The Goodwood at Morphettville last May.

“When Faatinah came out (of the Lightning) they walked and then the pace went on,” Kent said.

“He loomed to win but I was disappointed in his last 100 metres, but then he did blow out.

“He’s never run a bad race but he was coming off an eight-month break after jarring up.

“I’m happy how he’s come on and that’s why I’m happy to squeeze another run in.”
