Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic and first-time quarter-finalist Alex de Minaur meet in the last eight of Wimbledon this Wednesday, with a spot in the semi-finals on the line.

For Djokovic, his Wimbledon campaign is building exactly the way he’d want. The Serbian underwent knee surgery a month ago and was understandably tentative with his movement across the first few rounds.

He still managed to see off qualifier Vit Kopriva, local hope Jacob Fearnly and Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in three or four sets. Most recently, however, he stepped his game up a gear and routed No.15 seed Holger Rune in straight sets to book his spot in the quarter-finals.

There is a reason the 24-time Grand Slam champion has a heavy lead in the Djokovic v de Minaur odds with online bookmakers. He looked very, very good against Rune.

De Minaur also comes into this clash having won his round-of-16 match in straightforward fashion, and having had a relatively easy path over the last nine days.

He then saw off Spain’s Jaume Munar before receiving a walkover in the third round.

Most recently, he defeated young Arthur Fils in to make the quarter-finals. Fils took a set off him, but de Minaur looked in control for the majority of the match.

However, on match point against Fils, de Minaur lunged for a volley and appeared to do himself some damage to the lower back or hamstring area.

Djokovic should win this match in convincing fashion.

The Serbian defeated de Minaur just two months ago in Monte-Carlo in straight sets. While that was on clay, Djokovic only gets better when the bounce is faster.

He’s also an elite-level returner who will punish de Minaur’s underpowered serve all day.

The Australian gains an edge over others on tour through his brilliant movement. However, Djokovic matches him in that department and has the kind of pinpoint accuracy on attack that will neutralise de Minaur’s strength.

Throw in the fact that de Minaur is potentially nursing an injury, and that swings the match decisively towards Djokovic. Even if he is able to play, there may be some hesitation in his movement.

Back Djokovic to tear through this one in similar fashion to his Rune match, covering the spread and coming away in straight sets.
