Crystal Dreamer adds to tally at Caulfield
Crystal Dreamer has earned himself another shot at a stakes race after sitting wide and proving too strong at Caulfield.
Sent out the $3.20 favourite in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap on Saturday, Crystal Dreamer landed his 10th career win from 22 starts.
Ridden by apprentice Stephanie Thornton, Crystal Dreamer sat wide before hitting the lead at 150m mark and holding off a late bid by Danuki ($31) to score by a half length with Thermal Current ($7) a nose away third.
Crystal Dreamer’s victory registered a treble for training partners Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra who were successful with Ollivander in the Evergreen Turf Plate.
“He’s built a pretty good record now and funnily enough that was his first win at 1100 metres,” Ellerton said of Crystal Dreamer.
“With the three kilo claim he came into the race well.
“He got a bit aggressive there midrace but if he pulls up alright we’ll go 10 days into the Christmas Stakes.”
The Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) is run at Caulfield on Boxing Day and the training partners are keen to try the five-year-old again at 1200m.
Crystal Dreamer has registered four wins at 1200m, the most recent in January.
“As he’s got older he seems to like it a bit shorter but we’ll give him his chance at 1200 again,” Ellerton said.
“He’ll still get in the Christmas Stakes alright I think, but then after he could get a bit hard to place.”
