Crown Casino to implement cashless gaming cards by end of year
The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission has officially mandated Crown Casino to integrate cashless gaming cards into its electronic gaming machines, including spending limits, by the end of the year.
This upgrade is intended as an anti-money laundering measure, linking all electronic machine games played at the casino to a person’s identity through their gaming card.
With the upgrade, customers will have to specify into the machine their maximum spend limit and how long they want to play before starting. Crown also promised to implement more measures including relocating unrestricted gaming machines, limiting credits to $1000 per machine, and removing all machines that allow continuous play.
The commission’s chair, Fran Thorn, commended Crown for their efforts at enhancing patrons’ gaming experience and looking out for their wellbeing. She then stated that the commission will closely monitor how the measures are implemented.
Crown Melbourne CEO, Mike Volkert, expressed his enthusiasm for the new changes, saying they would greatly improve the company’s ability to prevent and reduce gambling harm.
“These industry-leading reforms are an essential part of Crown’s ambition to be a world leader in safe and responsible gambling and entertainment,” Volkert said.
These changes come just one week after Crown Melbourne was fined $30 million for breaching problem gambling and money laundering controls by allowing gamblers to deposit bank cheques made out to themselves. The recent fine is asides the $200 million it was fined last year for sundry regulatory breaches.
