Friday night football for round 12 kicks off at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville with a crunch clash between the two clubs that battled it out in the 2005 NRL Grand Final: the North Queensland Cowboys and Wests Tigers.

The Cowboys survived a scare from the Rabbitohs in Magic Round to break a five-match losing streak and hold 12th place on the NRL ladder. A win on Friday would keep them within touching distance of the top eight leading into the State of Origin period.

The Tigers suffered a disappointing loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. Despite putting in much better performances than their 2023 season, Wests are straggling in 15th place on the ladder.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has named an unchanged line-up following their win on the weekend. However, Kyle Feldt has been named in the reserves to return from an ankle injury and could be a late inclusion in the starting side over Braidon Burns.

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has made several changes, with Isaiah Papali’i returning from suspension in place of Asu Kepaoa on the second row. Justin Olam and Brent Naden are both suspended, with Declan Casey and Josh Feledy named in the centres as replacements.

Cowboys v Tigers predictions

The Tigers come into this match having lost each of their last seven matches, and their last trip to Townsville ended in a 74-0 capitulation. Also, they have lost their last three matches by 12 points or less, while the Cowboys’ last four games have been decided by no more than six points. At $3.15 with online bookmakers, there is value in backing that trend to continue with a 1-12 win to the Cowboys.

In four of their five wins this season, including last weekend, the Cowboys have taken the lead into the half-time break. At their home ground, in front of their own fans, North Queensland will be expected to perform for the full 80 minutes and complete the half-time/full-time double ($1.44).

With a couple of matches to go before Queensland coach Billy Slater selects his State of Origin squad, Cowboys captain Tom Dearden will be looking to build on his form of five tries from nine line breaks and countless tackle breaks this season.
