Round 24 NRL preview: Cowboys v Raiders

The Cowboys will be looking to bounce back when the Canberra Raiders visit Townsville on Saturday in round 24 of the NRL Premiership.

North Queensland were disappointing in last Saturday’s derby clash, losing to the Broncos by 24 points at home. Leading 18-12 at half-time, it was a horror second-half showing from the Cowboys as they conceded five unanswered tries.

The result has shattered the Cowboys’ top-four hopes, as they have fallen down to seventh on the NRL ladder. However, they had won five of their previous six matches, so they enter this clash as favourites at $1.52 with PlayUp.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten has made a statement at selection, dropping halfback Chad Townsend. Jake Clifford has been named as his replacement, while Thomas Mikaele comes in for second-rower Jeremiah Nanai, who will miss due to concussion.

The Raiders also lost in round 23, going down to the Sea Eagles by 22 points in Canberra. After a promising start from Ricky Stuart’s men, Manly proceeded to score seven straight tries in a dominant victory.

Two straight losses have practically ended Canberra’s finals hopes, as they’ve dropped to 11th on the ladder. They are underdogs for this clash at $2.70 with Bet365.

Losing winger Jordan Rapana to concussion has forced a selection shuffle for the Raiders, with Seb Kris going to the wing, Ethan Strange to centre and Adam Cook to five-eighth. Danny Levi and Emre Guler have been added to the bench, with Trey Mooney dropping to the reserves.
