Can the Collingwood Magpies win this Sunday without their star ruckman Brodie Grundy, or will the Gold Coast Suns cause a big upset at the MCG in this big AFL round seven clash?
The Pies made it through their big ANZAC Day clash against the Bombers with a victory, but they unfortunately sustained injuries to Brodie Grundy and Nathan Kreuger.
Craig McRae will have to play around with the magnets this week to cover the two key position losses, which could see Mason Cox make his return to the senior squad.
The Suns were once again outmuscled by the Lions in round six, ultimately conceding 132 points in the 52-point loss.
Stuart Dew’s men have had their ups and downs so far this AFL season, and this is a huge opportunity for them to bounce back after a disappointing loss.
Last year’s clash between these sides at the MCG was one to forget for the Magpies, as an uncharacteristically low crowd attended what was one of the Pies worst performances of the year.
Brandon Ellis and Touk Miller ran rings around the Maggies in the midfield and returned home with a very handy four goal win, completing one of the Suns best performances of the 2021 season.
There is every chance the Suns can produce another upset this week when Jarrod Witts faces his old teammates, as the star ruckman will not have to worry about taking on the All-Australian Grundy.
Key matchup: Darcy Moore vs Mabior Chol
One player who has consistently impacted for the Suns this season is Mabior Chol, who has been fantastic since moving away from Richmond. Chol is a very athletic forward who has sticky hands in the air, meaning the Pies will most likely send Darcy Moore his way.
These two athletes are both a joy to watch, but it will a crucial battle if they go head-to-head. The winner of this individual match-up could decide the entire match, and we think the odds are only slightly in favour of Moore. Quick ball-movement out of the middle will favour Chol, while stagnant and hesitant play will suit the Magpies.
Collingwood vs Gold Coast betting tips
Gold Coast Suns +11.5
We think the Magpies are in for a troublesome bout this Sunday, as the Suns should jump them early and try to replicate what the achieved last year. The importance of Brodie Grundy to the Magpies’ plans cannot be underestimated, however, they did beat the Melbourne Demons without him last season. The Suns will get very close to winning this Sunday and can even get over the line if Touk Miller gets off the chain again.
Gold Coast Suns +11.5
Jeremy Howe 20+ disposals
One of the key components to the Magpies’ backline is their spiritual leader in Jeremy Howe, who has barely gotten on the park the last two seasons. Howe has had a good run of form this season thus far and looked back to his best on ANZAC day. The former Demon plucked 13 marks and finished with 23 disposals in a near-best-on-ground performance. Look out for Howe to be at his intercepting best again this weekend.
Jeremy Howe to get 20+ disposals
Same game multi: 3 legs @ $7.63
Be prepared for the Suns to serve up a very tough contest at the MCG this weekend, led by Mabior Chol up forward. Jeremy Howe will step up for the Pies and collect plenty of touches, but it may not be enough to get them over the line. He is at a good price with online bookmakers.
Gold Coast Suns +11.5 / Howe 20+ disposals / Chol 2+ goals
