Magpies v Demons R13 match preview
Collingwood will host Melbourne in the traditional Kings Birthday slot on Monday, with this clash marking the end of AFL round 13 action.
The Magpies enter this match as slight favourites at $1.85 with BoomBet, while the Demons are at $2.05 with Bet365. AFL bookmakers are expecting a close match, with the line set at just 2.5 points.
Last Friday, Collingwood’s eight-match unbeaten streak was broken as they went down to the Western Bulldogs by 18 points at Marvel Stadium. In a high-scoring contest, Craig McRae’s held control for most of the game, but they faded late, conceding the last five goals, while going scoreless in the final term.
Sitting in ninth place on the ladder, cracks have emerged in the Magpies premiership defence. But with an extensive injury list all due to return in the coming weeks, AFL bookies are not worried about their finals hopes, still priced at $1.36 to finish in the top eight.
A pair of Magpies are expected to return this week as wingman Will Hoskin-Elliott (hamstring) and forward Reef McInnes (concussion) have recovered from injury.
It was a disappointing performance from the Demons in round 12 as they lost to Fremantle by 92 points in Alice Springs. Kicking just 49 points for the day, it was all one-way traffic, in a performance that has put serious doubts around Melbourne’s premiership hopes.
Losing three of their past four games, it has all fallen apart recently for Simon Goodwin’s side, who now sit in 10th on the ladder. However, like the Magpies, Australian bookies expect the Demons to recover, with the short odds of $1.45 to make the top eight.
Given their poor performance against the Dockers, expect plenty of changes this week for the Demons as they look to make a statement at the selection table. Key forward Jacob van Rooyen should be straight back into the side after missing round 12, but winger Lachie Hunter is a forced out after suffering a calf injury.

Collingwood v Melbourne betting tips and strategy
While the Magpies enter this clash as the more in-form side, their ever-growing injury list is a major cause for concern. With both sides sitting just outside the top eight, this could be a season-defining result so expect a thrilling matchup. However, after their embarrassing effort last week, expect the Demons to be fired up, putting together a statement performance and securing the win at $2.05 with Bet365 (bet365 review).
While his brother Nick has gained all the attention in recent weeks, Collingwood wingman Josh Daicos has been on an excellent run of his own. Averaging over 24 disposals per game this season, the 25-year-old ranks second at the club for disposals. With over 25 in three of the last four weeks, back Daicos to put in another big performance with 25 or more disposals at $2.15 with Ladbrokes.
With the Demons attack struggling to hit the scoreboard in recent weeks, expect goal-scoring midfielders such as Christian Petracca to stand up in a big game. The top score involvement player in the AFL, Petracca has also kicked nine goals in his last four matches. With the ability to break out of packs or take marks on the lead, back the 28-year-old to hit the scoreboard with two or more goals at $2.60.
