Collingwood v Brisbane R23 preview
The Brisbane Lions will be looking to keep their top-four hopes alive when they head to the MCG this Saturday afternoon to face Collingwood in round 23 of the 2024 AFL season.
Last Friday, Collingwood missed a golden opportunity as they fell to the Sydney Swans by three points at the SCG. Leading by 27 points early in the final term, the Magpies collapsed late, all but ending their finals hopes.
Sitting in 11th spot, Craig McRae’s men have had a terrible finish to the season, winning just two of their last seven matches. As they face one of the form sides in the AFL, they enter this clash as underdogs at $2.40 with PlayUp.
After getting through unscathed against the Swans, there should be no forced changes for the Pies this week. Ed Allan, Fin Macrae and Lachie Sullivan have all showed strong form in the VFL and will be in the mix for a recall.
Brisbane also failed to finish the job in round 22, going down to the GWS Giants by 18 points at the Gabba. The Lions controlled most of game, leading by 20 points late in the third term, but conceded eight of the last nine goals as they slumped to their first home defeat since round six.
This loss broke a run of nine straight wins for the Lions, who have now dropped out of the top four. They remain second favourites for the premiership at $4.50, however, while Bet365 has them at $1.60 to beat the Pies in Melbourne.
The Lions are expecting to regain Eric Hipwood after a few weeks out with a groin injury. This leaves either Henry Smith or Darragh Joyce as the likely omission, depending on whether Chris Fagan wants Hipwood to play forward or back.

Collingwood v Brisbane betting predictions
Despite going down to the Giants, Brisbane still enter this clash in much greater form and with more on the line. The MCG hasn’t quite been a fortress for the Magpies in 2024, so back the Lions to cover the line of 8.5 points at $1.91 with leading AFL bookmakers.
With seven goals in his last four matches, Bobby Hill has been Collingwood’s most dangerous forward over the past month. The former Giant loves playing against the Lions, averaging three goals per match across their last three meetings. Brisbane were torn apart by the speed of Darcy Jones and Brent Daniels for the Giants last Saturday, so back Hill to do the same and kick two or more goals at $2.55 with top online bookies.
Held goalless against the Giants for the first time since round 11, explosive Brisbane midfielder Cam Rayner will be looking to bounce back. He had kicked multiple goals in his previous six matches and averages two goals per game across his last four meetings with the Magpies. At $2.15 with leading Australian betting sites, back Rayner to return to form with two or more goals.
