Clive Churchill 2023 betting tips, best oods & predictions
With the 2023 NRL Grand Final set for Sunday night, we look ahead to see which players could be adjudged best-on-ground and earn the honour of winning the Clive Churchill Medal.
2023 Clive Churchill Medal favourites
Nathan Cleary (Panthers)
The clear bookmaker favourite for the award, Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary is always a threat of breaking a game open. Winning the award back in 2021, Cleary is the main playmaker for the Panthers who are favourites in the clash. With two tries already this finals series, Cleary scores points not just as the kicker but also on the park. If the Penrith Panthers win, it is hard to look past Cleary.
Best odds for Nathan Cleary
Reece Walsh (Broncos)
A breakout star in the NRL, fullback Reece Walsh has had an exceptional finals campaign so far for the Broncos. With four try assists and a try so far this finals campaign, Walsh is always a danger of breaking through tackles to set up teammates. If Walsh can get on the scoreboard in a Broncos win, he’ll be right up there to win the medal.
Best odds for Reece Walsh
Adam Reynolds (Broncos
The main playmaker at the Broncos, Adam Reynolds most notably showed his class in the first week of finals with two try assists against the Melbourne Storm. With plenty of ways to impact the game, Reynolds can appeal to the selectors through his kicking game, playmaking and scoring. One of few Broncos with Grand Final experience, expect Reynolds to be composed and able to handle the pressure.
Best odds for Adam Reynolds
Dylan Edwards (Panthers)
Winner of award last year, Dylan Edwards is once again a chance to win the award in 2023. He shows great ability both offensively and defensively to impact matches and is extremely reliable under the high ball. He won the award in 2022 without scoring a try but would be surprised if he was able to win it again without getting over.
Best odds for Dylan Edwards
Payne Haas (Broncos)
The powerhouse of the Brisbane Broncos forward pack, Payne Haas is extremely hard to bring down when carrying the ball. Gaining over 200 run metres most weeks, Haas is extremely hard working, but also possesses the ball skills to offload the ball multiple times a match. Unlikely to score, Haas may lose some of the attention from selectors, but if the Broncos win, Haas will have put forward an excellent performance.
Best odds for Payne Hass

Jerome Luai (Panthers)
A key part of the Panthers core that has reached four straight Grand Finals, five-eighth Jerome Luai was shaky in his return from injury last weekend. A risk of being subbed off with Jack Cogger on the bench, Luai still possesses the ability to break open a defence with his elite playmaking game. Combining well with Nathan Cleary, Luai presents as a player who could end up with multiple try assists or even getting over himself.
Best odds for Jerome Luai
Ezra Mam (Broncos)
Named at five-eighth in the Dally M team of the season, Ezra Mam has been a critical part of the Broncos run to the Grand Final. With six tries in his last six matches, Mam has the ability to appeal to selectors through multiple ways. At just twenty years old the occasion may be daunting, but if Mam puts together a solid performance in a Broncos win, he will be a chance.
Best odds for Ezra Mam
Brian To’o (Panthers)
Unlucky not to win the medal last year, Panthers’ winger Brian To’o presents more output than the regular winger. Often collecting over 250 run metres, To’o will need to combine that with major scoreboard impact if he is to appeal to the selectors. However, a winger has never won the Clive Churchill, so the odds are stacked against him.
Best odds for Brian To’o

Herbie Farnworth (Broncos)
Following an excellent game last weekend against the Broncos where he had two tries and led the game for run metres, Broncos’ centre Herbie Farnworth may have been adjudged best-on-ground. If he replicates something similar, he would be a chance for the medal, but traditionally centres have struggled to impress the selectors.
Best odds for Herbie Farnworth
Izack Tago (Panthers
With doubles in three of his last six matches, Izack Tago has showed that he can provide major scoreboard impact. However just scoring won’t be enough, so Tago will need to provide some critical moments in order to be a chance at the medal.
Best odds for Herbie Farnworth
Selwyn Cobbo (Broncos)
An excitement machine on the wing, Selwyn Cobbo has the class and explosiveness to become a real difference-maker in this match. A regular at representative level for Queensland, Cobbo regularly hits the scoreboard multiple times in a match. Unfortunately he is a winger, which counts against him.
Best odds for Selwyn Cobbo
