Challenges abound for Australian players at the 2023 Wimbledon
Day three at Wimbledon 2023 presented a multitude of challenges for Australian players. Rain delays, formidable opponents, and even an on-court protest tested their resilience.
In his debut on Centre Court, Jordan Thompson displayed remarkable determination. Despite delivering 21 aces and 43 winners, his efforts fell short against second seed Novak Djokovic in the second-round clash. Djokovic, acknowledging Thompson’s impressive performance, commended him in the on-court tennis interview.
Djokovic secured a 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-5 victory, advancing to the third round at the All England Club for an astounding 17th time. This win also marked Djokovic’s 350th career Grand Slam main-draw singles victory, placing him alongside the exclusive company of Roger Federer and Serena Williams.
In an epic first-round battle, Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker, aged 20, triumphed over Alexei Popyrin in a five-set encounter. Popyrin, the 23-year-old Australian, surrendered a 4-1 lead in the deciding set, allowing Stricker to claim his first Grand Slam main-draw victory.
Daria Saville, Australia’s last remaining hope in the ladies’ singles competition, faced disappointment. Resuming her rain-delayed first-round match against British No.1 Katie Boulter, Saville held a 6-5 lead. However, she couldn’t capitalise on her promising start. Saville’s momentum was disrupted by an on-court protest during the opening-set tiebreak, ultimately leading to her defeat as Boulter seized control with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory.
For Alex de Minaur, Jason Kubler, and Chris O’Connell, their opening-round matches were interrupted by fading light. The positive news is that all three were leading when play was suspended.
