The top eight battle heats up when Carlton clash with St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Friday night in Round 16 of the 2022 AFL season.
Despite a worrying injury list, Carlton continues to unearth new talent and their drive toward September action remains intact. In a tightly packed race for finals, the Blues sit equal second on premiership points, and were very impressive against the Dockers in round 16.
Coach Voss has instilled the confidence to play free flowing football in his young chargers, and the Blues are responding with fearless flair. The midfield is stacked with ball-winning talent, the defenders look assured despite the absence of Weitering, and the forward line is producing points. There is much to like about the Carlton game plan.
The Saints are currently on the skids. Their dismal display against Sydney sees them fall out of the top eight, and the Saints will need to find new ways to score if they are to arrest the form slump.
Prior to their round 15 loss, we highlighted some damning St Kilda stats, primarily their inability to generate enough inside 50s, which then hampers scoring opportunities. Not many games are won by posting a score under 80 points, and the Saints returned a miserable 4.8.32 at the SCG. This is a disturbing trend for Saints supporters.
Key matchup: Charlie Curnow vs Dougal Howard
Carlton key forward Charlie Curnow looks like the danger man here. Fresh from a four-goal haul against the parsimonious Dockers, Curnow is playing with maximum confidence and is averaging over 3 goals per game in 2022. Aided by clean service from the likes of Cripps and Walsh, the big man is ‘up and about’, as the pundits like to say.
St Kilda key defender Dougal Howard will have his hands full during this contest. Howard is averaging 9.7 spoils per game this season and will need to be at his disruptive best if the Saints are to have any chance. Howard doesn’t grab too many intercept marks, averaging a mere 1.8 per game, but if he can get the spoiling fist working, the smaller defenders can hopefully mop up the loose ground ball. The rampaging Curnow versus the big punching Howard is our key match-up
Carlton vs St Kilda line betting tips
Betting markets are being surprisingly generous with Carlton’s price here. One of the golden rules of sports wagering is to bet for hot team and against cold ones. And when a hot team plays against a cold team – bet twice as much. Is that the scenario here? Carlton just held the high flying Freo to a lowly 50 points, and the Saints are clearly struggling. So that will be our play. We will be placing a double sized wager on Carlton at the line. Carlton -9.5 points is the tip, and we will be going large. Follow along if you agree with our assessment.
Carlton -9.5
Collingwood vs GWS same-game multi picks
For punters that prefer smaller bets and bigger odds, we recommend a same game combo to deliver the weekend’s profits. The tip is Carlton -9.5, into Jack Silvagni anytime goal scorer, into Sam Docherty 25+ disposals, into Charlie Curnow 2+ goals. This multi will return $4.38 courtesy of Ladbrokes. Tune in for this pivotal clash to see if our hot versus cold theory gets over the line.
Carlton -9.5 / Curnow 2+ goals / Docherty 25+ disposals / Silvagni anytime goal scorer
