Round 24 AFL preview: Carlton Blues v St Kilda Saints
With destiny in their hands, Carlton will be out to lock in a top-eight spot on the AFL ladder when they tackle St Kilda at Marvel Stadium this Sunday afternoon.
Carlton were largely written off when they travelled west to take on the Eagles in round 23. Their injury-hit lineup was hobbling toward an inglorious end to the season and Carlton’s odds drifted all week with leading AFL bookmakers.
Despite the external lack of confidence, the Blues produced one of the grittiest performances of the season to beat West Coast by 65 points. The win moves them into eighth spot on the AFL ladder, and if they can replicate that type of effort, September action awaits.
Carlton named both Charlie Curnow (ankle) and Mitch McGovern (hamstring) on Thursday, but Curnow has since been ruled out and McGovern is touch and go. Adam Saad and Orazio Fantasia, however, could be back in action.
Despite starting at big odds with AFL betting sites, St Kilda put on a fourth-quarter blitz to spoil Geelong’s party in round 23. The Saints have enjoyed a solid end to the home-and-away season, with four wins from their last five games, and should prove competitive in this contest.
St Kilda look a different side when they can finish truly. Scoring sufficient points has been their weakness all year, but against the Cats, they kicked 16 majors from 54 inside 50s. They won the contested and uncontested possession counts and took 20 contested marks inside 50 to Geelong’s 13.
St Kilda will be without Anthony Caminiti, who suffered a shoulder injury in the win over the Cats. On the plus side, the exciting Mattaes Phillipou will return from illness, while Jack Hayes, Tom Campbell and Angus McLennan have all been added to the extended squad.

Carlton v St Kilda R24 predictions
After their heroics in the west, Carlton might face a reality check against the in-form Saints. The Blues lack experience and may be exposed under some genuine pressure. The Saints are flying, so back them to spoil another party at +114 on Neds.
Under the Marvel Stadium roof, this looks like a high-scoring affair. The Saints have been much more potent in recent weeks, and the Blues will throw everything forward if they are trailing late. Take the -111.11 on Unibet for over 167.5 total points.
Mattaes Phillipou returns for the Saints and will be keen to impress fans in his final appearance for the year. The 19-year-old has kicked seven goals from 12 games in 2024 and offers great value as an anytime goalkicker at +165 on PlayUp.
