Round 20 preview: Carlton v Port Adelaide
Round 20 of the 2024 AFL Premiership season kicks off with a thrilling clash on Friday night as top-four contenders Carlton and Port Adelaide face off at Marvel Stadium.
Given the Blues won by 36 points when these sides met in round 12, it is no surprise that they are $1.48 favourites with PlayUp. The Power are underdogs at $2.80, while the line is set at 14.5 points.
Last Sunday, Carlton survived a major scare to beat North Melbourne by 19 points at Marvel Stadium. They trailed midway through the third quarter, but quality prevailed as they ran out the match. Coleman Medal leader Charlie Curnow slotted four second-half goals, while Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Cripps continued his excellent form with 29 disposals.
The win broke a run of two straight losses for Michael Voss’ men, who remain in second place on the ladder. At $4.50 with leading AFL bookmakers, they have the second-best premiership odds.
The Blues have copped a major blow with ruckman Tom De Koning suffering a collapsed lung and a broken foot, ruling him out for the rest of the home-and-away season. Expect Marc Pittonet to return in the ruck, while key defensive pair Caleb Marchbank and Mitch McGovern will also be in the mix.
Port Adelaide were also successful in round 19, beating the last-placed Richmond by 41 points at Adelaide Oval. Despite being tested for three quarters, the Power were too strong in the end and kicked the last four goals of the match. Veteran forward Charlie Dixon returned to form with four goals, while Ollie Wines led the match with 32 disposals.
The Power have now won three of their last four matches to climb up to seventh place on the ladder. Right in the middle of the fight for finals spots, top AFL betting sites give them odds of $1.80 to finish inside the top eight.
Port coach Ken Hinkley could have a few tough calls to make at selection this week, as defensive trio Trent McKenzie, Ryan Burton and Lachie Jones should all be available to return. Key forward Todd Marshall is also set to come back, with Ollie Lord the likely omission after just two touches against the Tigers.

Blues v Power AFL R20 betting strategy
While Port Adelaide come into this clash with better form on paper, they have won just one of their last three matches on the road. Also, the Power have lost each of their past three against Carlton. Despite a five-day break and the loss of their starting ruckman, the Blues should be too good, winning by less than 40 points at $2.05 with top Australian bookies.
Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps is averaging 34.2 disposals per game across the last five weeks and leads the AFL for contested possessions this season. Across his career he averages 28.6 touches per game against the Power, so back Cripps to continue his good form with 30 or more at $2.15 with leading sports bookmakers.
Similarly in-form, Port Adelaide midfielder Zak Butters is averaging a career-best 28.1 disposals per game. The 2023 All-Australian has collected over 30 disposals on eight occasions this season, including three times in the past five weeks. As the Power’s disposal leader in 2024, back Butters for another haul of 30 or more at $2.15 with Bet365.
