Carlton v Melbourne AFL R22 match preview
This Saturday night, the Carlton Blues host the Melbourne Demons at the MCG in what shapes as a thrilling contest between two of the in-form teams in the AFL.
The Blues continued their winning ways last weekend, beating St Kilda by 19 points at Marvel Stadium. After a strong first half from the Saints, they led by 22 points at half time. However, the Carlton defence stood up in the second half, keeping the Saints to only one goal compared to the seven goals from the Blues.
This comeback victory extends the Carlton winning streak to six matches and they sit in fifth spot on the AFL ladder. They have knocked off a number of top-eight teams in that run and will be hoping to take another big scalp this weekend.
The Melbourne Demons faced the Kangaroos last Sunday, winning by 32 points in Hobart. North Melbourne started the game strong and led by 26 points at quarter time; however, that was all they could put together, as the Demons kicked 13 of the next 16 goals before three-quarter time. The Dees were unable to build on their lead in the last quarter and gain some much-needed percentage, as both sides kicked only one goal.
This win was the Demons’ fifth in a row and lifted them to second on the ladder. With some tough games ahead, Melbourne will need to continue winning to hold onto their top-two spot on the ladder.
Expect few changes for the Blues this weekend. Defender Jordan Boyd returns from suspension, but many of Carlton’s injured stars remain at least a week away.
After impressing as a forward over the last few weeks, Harrison Petty has now been ruled out for the season after suffering a foot injury on the weekend. In line to take his spot is Tom McDonald, who returns from an ankle injury. In a major boost, star midfielder Clayton Oliver may also be available after several weeks out with a hamstring problem.

Carlton v Melbourne AFL R22 best bets
This should be a high-quality contest between two of the best defences in the AFL. The last time these two sides faced off, it was a low-scoring contest that the Demons won by 17 points. However, both teams’ form has drastically improved since then, so we are expecting the game to open up a lot more.
Throughout the last six weeks, Carlton have rarely looked like losing. Coming off wins against finals contenders Port Adelaide, Collingwood, and St Kilda in the past month, it is hard to look past the Blues as $2.25 underdogs with Ladbrokes.
Having his greatest season yet in front of goal, Demons star Christian Petracca has been excellent rolling forward from midfield. With nine scoring shots over the last two weeks, Petracca is creating opportunities regularly throughout games. Clayton Oliver’s likely return could lead to more minutes in the forward half for Petracca, making him a great play for two or more goals at $1.76 with top AFL bookmakers.
Coming off an excellent performance with 27 disposals and two goals last weekend, Carlton wingman Blake Acres has been building a strong body of work this season. The former St Kilda and Fremantle player averages 23.5 disposals a game this year and finds most of his footy uncontested along the wing. We like Acres to continue his good form with 25 or more disposals at $2.25.

Since returning to the side two weeks ago, Marc Pittonet has taken back the role of number one ruckman at the Blues. Comfortably beaten in both games, Pittonet faces his biggest challenge yet this weekend against one of the premier ruckmen in the competition. A strong defensive performance with some assistance from Tom de Koning will be required to limit the impact of Melbourne skipper Max Gawn, who has been in outstanding form over the past month.
