Caravaggio still in Everest mix

Caravaggio is still in the frame for a trip to Australia for The Everest despite losing his unbeaten record in the July Cup.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said the colt could be seen next in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville over six and a half furlongs (1300m) on August 6.

The Coolmore-owned Caravaggio finished fourth as the 10-11 favourite in Saturday’s July Cup won by Harry Angel.

“We ran a good race, but the winner was very good on the day,” O’Brien said.

“The lads will obviously decide what’s next, but John (Magnier) was just saying that we might have a look at the Maurice de Gheest.

“We’ll see how he is after a week or 10 days. I think the Everest is still on the table. If he went to France that could be very much so still.

“After France the lads would have to make a decision what they want to do. Whether they want to go to Australia. I imagine if he was going there he would have to have a little break.

“Either that or he’d just keep going on, to York or somewhere. We’ll try to get to the next one first and see how we go.”

Caravaggio is the second favourite behind Chautauqua for the $10 million Everest at Randwick on October 14.
