The final game of round five sees the top of the table Penrith Panthers take on the Canterbury Bulldogs in what could be a rough outing for coach Trent Barrett and his men. Coach Barrett has finally called up specialty halfback Kyle Flanagan from reserve grade, but this has given Canterbury no edge in the betting markets. Penrith have been heavily backed in head-to-head markets, going from as long as $1.60 to as short as $1.07 with online bookmakers. This has seen the Bulldogs drift from as short as $2.15 all the way out to a top fluc of $8.50. In 42 clashes, Penrith have won on 23 occasions, including seven of the last ten clashes.
It goes without saying that Penrith should win this match, and in convincing fashion. However, with inclement weather predicted it may be hard to score points. That would be primarily for the Bulldogs, who have only scored 28 points this season. The Panthers have piled on 112 points in the four matches this season, so the -20 point line looks well and truly within the grasp of this Panthers side. On the other hand, it’s hard to see the total points for the match going over 39.5 points in the game.
The left edge attack for the Panthers have been dynamic in the opening four rounds, with rookies Taylan May and Izack Tago, along with Viliame Kikau have already crossed the white strip. Expect to see this trend continue as all three should be able to go over at any time during the match. Kikau in particular represents incredible value at $3.10 to score at any time.

Key matchup: Kyle Flanagan vs Nathan Cleary
Unlike many key matchups, this one is not about one beating the other, but one proving he is just as good as the other. Kyle Flanagan has been unfairly treated since his exit from the Sydney Roosters, as well as in his time at Canterbury. While Flanagan does not have the cattle around him that Cleary does, there are aspects of Cleary’s game Flanagan can replicate to prove his worthiness in the NRL. His kicking game and team management – both areas where Cleary flourishes – will be in the spotlight.
Bulldogs vs Panthers predictions & same-game multi
The Penrith Panthers should win this one easily, covering the -20 point line, without exceeding the total match points of 39.5. Expect the left edge of Penrith to continue their hot form, with May, Tago and Kikau all to score a try. This will net punters a handsome $11.71 with BetOnline.
