Bulldogs terminate Addo-Carr over failed drug test

Josh Addo-Carr has been terminated from the Canterbury Bulldogs, effective immediately, with the club’s board announcing the decision on Thursday night.

The winger’s future has been up in the air since a failed roadside drug test in September kept him from participating in the Bulldogs’ NRL finals campaign.

Addo-Carr insisted he did not take drugs, even after a second test came back positive, and made his case to the board on Thursday to uphold his contract.

“The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs football club today announces the termination of Josh Addo-Carr’s playing contract, effective immediately,” the club said in a statement.

“This decision was not made lightly and follows careful consideration by the board.

“Josh has been a significant part of our club over the past three seasons.

“During this time, he has provided many memorable moments for our members and fans.

“We understand Josh’s popularity with our passionate supporter base, and we share their disappointment that his time with the club has ended this way.”

The club cited a lack of transparency following the 29-year-old’s failed roadside drug test as a reason for his dismissal.

“This season has demonstrated the importance of building a culture based on clear standards and values,” the statement continued.

“While the NRL Integrity Unit has completed its investigation and imposed a four-match suspension, the club views the combination of the failed drug test and subsequent lack of transparency as serious breaches of Josh’s contractual obligations and our club’s standards.”

Addo-Carr was on a $550,000 contract with Canterbury through to the end of 2025 and now becomes a free agent.

He joins the likes of Ben Hunt, Matt Lodge and Anthony Milford as names without contracts heading into the next NRL campaign.
