The Cronulla Sharks head north on Thursday to take on the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Early signs are that Payne Haas will fight through an AC joint injury sustained against the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Sharks captain Dale Finucane returns to the starting side as skipper to strengthen an already strong forward pack. The Broncos will be looking to make it two in a row, while the Sharks will be looking to build on what was close to a perfect first half of NRL against Manly.
Early betting in the head-to-head markets has fluctuated as Brisbane Broncos has drifted and firmed between $3.50 and $4, seeing the Sharks chop and change between $1.25 and $1.30. Some of this support could be due to the Broncos having won 26 of 43 clashes with the Sharks. One of those clashes was last year where the Broncos did win by eight points with an arguably poorer side than the one that will run out on Thursday.
The Cronulla Sharks shocked many fans and experts alike as they piled on an enormous 34 points in 40 minutes against the Manly Sea Eagles on the short back up from a defeat to the Storm. The Sharks have started the season well taking down much classier opposition than the Brisbane Broncos, who are only four points behind on the NRL ladder.
Palmerbet are favouring the Sharks to win by 13+ points, which has created some value to be had in the betting markets. This season, the Broncos have shown they will not go down without a fight in Brisbane, having beaten the Rabbitohs in round one and taking the Roosters all the way to the end in round five. While the Sharks are expected to win, the Broncos are equally expected to put up a fight. This creates great value with the Sharks winning by 1-12 points paying $3.20.
The Sharks have been heavily dependant on their left edge attack so far this season, using Matt Moylan, Teig Wilton, Siosifa Talakai and Ronaldo Mulitalo to their highest potential. So far this season, it’s also been seen there are some massive defensive deficiencies on the right-hand side defence for Brisbane. Selwyn Cobbo, Kotoni Staggs and Jordan Riki have struggled at times, most notably against Penrith who attack in a similar style.
The Sharks will be targeting the Brisbane right edge defence, continuing to throw the ball to Talakai early with time and space around him to get defenders on the back foot before he storms through the defensive line. While the Broncos will have time to plan for this defensively, that will not make the Sharks easy to stop. Siosifa Talakai and Ronaldo Mulitalo are both set at great value odds of $2.15 and $1.64 respectively with the top bookmakers, as the Sharks will be forced to think more about how to get through this line, spreading the love between the two outside backs.
Wet weather has been predicted to hit Brisbane again starting this week. However, the arrival of that wet weather and its impact on NRL score lines has barely been seen this season. The Sharks have shown in incredible ability to score points in the wet this season, as have the Broncos when the rain starts falling. This makes the points total of 41.5 very ascertainable for both clubs, creating a great play for punters with the overs set at +41.5.
KEY MATCH UP: PAYNE HAAS V DALE FINUCANE
Both Blues Origin forwards Payne Haas and Dale Finucane have started this season in incredible form, leading both forward packs respectively to challenge opposing forward packs. Both forwards are coming off injuries, as Dale Finucane copped a head knock early and was ruled out early against Manly, and Payne Haas sustained an AC joint injury. The best forward packs this year in the NRL is often the determining factor in whether their team wins or loses. This match Thursday will be hard fought in the middle, led by these two warriors, and only one can win the battle that wins the war.
