Round 14: Broncos v Sharks match preview
Both the Brisbane Broncos and Cronulla Sharks are expected to be missing key players for their round 14 NRL clash at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday night, while both are also desperate for a win.
After dropping the ball against the Titans last weekend, the Broncos have three wins from their last five games. The hosts will be eager to win and cement themselves in the top four on the NRL ladder.
Meanwhile, the Sharks have hit a rough patch, losing to the Eels and Panthers over the last fortnight. Cronulla will need to win if they are to return to the top of the ladder this weekend.
Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon has opted to rest superstar halfback Nicho Hynes, while Teig Wilton is out with a shoulder injury and Braden Hamlin-Uele has been dropped. Siosifa Talakai will start in place of Wilton, with Tuku Hau Tapuha named on the interchange. Fitzgibbon has also named Cameron McInnes to back up from State of Origin.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters has named Queensland stars Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, and Pat Carrigan alongside Blues enforcer Payne Haas to play following Wednesday night’s Origin grudge match. Also, Kotoni Staggs will return from a rib injury at centre in place of Josaiah Karapani.

Brisbane Broncos v Cronulla Sharks match predictions
The Broncos will be looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing loss and capitalise on the Sharks’ losing streak. Brisbane have covered the line in each of their last four matches following a loss, and they’ve won nine of their last 11 clashes with Cronulla. Without halfback Hynes, the Sharks will struggle to stop the Broncos from winning and covering the -6.5 handicap (-111.11).
The forecasted clear, dry conditions should suit the Broncos, who will still have star winger Deine Mariner and five-eighth Ezra Mam looking to carve up the opposition’s defence. Brisbane have rarely struggled to score points at home, and the Sharks’ last four matches have been high-scoring affairs. Expect more than 46.5 total points on the board (-117.65).
Mariner has found a way to dominate in matches where the Broncos have started as favourites, and he has scored in seven of his last eight appearances. With seven line breaks, 30 tackle breaks, and 10 tries to his name this season, look for the flyer to score two or more tries this weekend (+145).
